Flow controllers are used to precisely measure and control the flow of gases and liquids in industrial applications. A traditional flow controller integrates a flow meter and a valve in a single unit, allowing the maintenance of extremely precise flow rates. The controller will allow a constant outflow even if the upstream pressure varies widely. Mass flow controllers are used to control the flow of gases by measuring the cooling effect that gaseous fluid has upon a tube that it passes through.
Flow controllers, while performing a simple task, can be used in a multitude of applications. Process control and water treatment are just two. While the essence of these devices is to control flow, there are many subvarieties which address specific needs. Some controllers contain easy-to-read dials which allow a user to dial in a particular flow value and for others to quickly see what the current flow setting is. Simple controllers will allow variation within a fixed range of flow, while more sophisticated units will allow the user to vary the span, allowing the same units to be used in applications with different flow ranges.
